You are absolutely right about this. Unless the service is unexplainably lousy (this means forgiving understaffing, peak times and that loud, demanding large party at the table across the room or the off-day), we always tip.
Women are known to be horrible tippers, especially moms. I think this is because we generally don't value our work in the home, so how does that translate to others.
Service workers get paid sh*t, get screwed on benefits, etc. A 20% tip for a meal decently served is a no-brainer. I'm sounding snobby here but really... I ate dinner off tips for a stretch. It makes a difference.
